Why are binoculars and monoculars filled with nitrogen?
Binoculars and monoculars are often filled with nitrogen to prevent moisture from entering the internal components of the device and causing fogging or condensation on the lenses.
When the air inside the binoculars or monocular contains moisture, it can condense on the cooler surfaces of the lenses and cause them to fog up. This can reduce the clarity of the image and make it difficult to see through the device. By filling the binoculars or monocular with nitrogen, the moisture is displaced and the internal environment becomes dry and stable, preventing fogging and condensation.
Nitrogen is used because it is an inert gas, which means it does not react with other substances and is not likely to cause corrosion or other damage to the internal components of the device.
