How to clean a binocular / monocular

How to clean a binocular / monocular

Binoculars and monoculars are a fantastic tool for observing nature, stargazing, and bird watching. However, like any other piece of equipment, they can become dirty and require cleaning. Keeping your binoculars and monoculars clean not only ensures they continue to perform optimally, but also extends their lifespan. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps on how to clean a binocular or monocular.

Firstly, make sure you have a clean and dry workspace with plenty of light. It’s important to avoid cleaning your binoculars and monoculars in dusty or windy environments as this can cause even more debris to accumulate on your lenses.
Start by removing any visible dirt or debris on the surface of the binoculars with a soft brush or compressed air. Be gentle and take care not to scratch the lenses or body of the binoculars / monocular.
For moderate dirt like fingerprints or similar, you can lightly breathe against the lenses until they fog up and then carefully remove the dirt with the cleaning cloth. This should be enough in most cases.

If there is more dirt, use a lens cleaning solution (like 70% Isopropyl alcohol solution) and a microfiber cloth to gently clean the lenses. Spray the solution onto the cloth rather than directly onto the lens. Wipe the lenses gently in circular motions, starting from the center and moving towards the edges.

If there are any stubborn smudges or marks on the lenses, use a lens cleaning pen to carefully remove them. These pens have a soft brush on one end for removing debris and a special cleaning tip on the other for removing stubborn marks.

For the body of the binoculars and monoculars, use a brush or/and a damp cloth to wipe away any dirt or grime. Avoid using any harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners as these can damage the body of the binoculars / monocular.

Finally, make sure to store your binoculars and monoculars in a dry and dust-free place. It’s a good idea to keep them in the protective case when not in use to prevent any scratches or damage.
In conclusion, cleaning your binoculars or monocular is a simple and easy process that can make a big difference in the clarity and longevity of your equipment. By following these simple steps, you can ensure your binoculars / monocular remain in top condition for years to come, allowing you to enjoy your hobby to the fullest.
